How it works

The axle ratio, also called the final drive or differential ratio, describes the gearing between a vehicle's driveshaft and its wheels, and this calculator finds it from the ring and pinion gear tooth counts. You enter the number of teeth on the ring gear and on the pinion gear, and it returns the ratio, expressed as a number to one. The ratio is simply the ring teeth divided by the pinion teeth, so a 41-tooth ring with an 11-tooth pinion gives about 3.73 to 1, meaning the driveshaft turns 3.73 times for every full turn of the wheels. This ratio has a big effect on how a vehicle drives. A higher, or numerically larger, ratio like 4.10 delivers stronger acceleration and towing power because it multiplies engine torque more, but it raises engine rpm at cruising speed, hurting fuel economy. A lower ratio like 3.08 does the opposite, favoring relaxed, efficient highway cruising over quick acceleration. Truck owners, off-roaders, and performance enthusiasts pay close attention to axle ratio when choosing or regearing a vehicle, and it interacts with tire size and transmission gearing to set overall performance. Enter the ring and pinion tooth counts to compute your axle ratio.

Formula

Axle ratio = ring gear teeth / pinion gear teeth

The axle, or final drive, ratio is the number of teeth on the ring gear divided by the number on the pinion gear. It tells you how many times the driveshaft, and thus the engine, turns for each turn of the wheels. A higher ratio means more turns of the driveshaft per wheel revolution, giving more torque but higher engine speed.

Frequently asked questions

What is an axle ratio?

The axle ratio, or final drive ratio, is the gearing in the differential between the driveshaft and the wheels. It equals the ring gear teeth divided by the pinion gear teeth and tells you how many times the driveshaft turns per wheel revolution. It strongly affects acceleration, towing capacity, and fuel economy.

How do I find my axle ratio?

Count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear and divide the ring count by the pinion count, which this calculator does. Alternatively, you can jack up the vehicle, mark the driveshaft and a tire, and count driveshaft turns per wheel turn, or check the axle tag or vehicle documentation for the ratio.

Is a higher or lower axle ratio better?

Neither is universally better; it depends on your goals. A higher, numerically larger ratio gives stronger acceleration and towing but higher engine rpm and lower fuel economy at cruise. A lower ratio gives relaxed, more economical highway driving but weaker acceleration. Trucks and off-road vehicles favor higher ratios, while highway cruisers favor lower ones.

How does axle ratio affect fuel economy?

A higher axle ratio makes the engine spin faster at any given road speed, which increases fuel consumption on the highway. A lower ratio lets the engine turn more slowly at cruising speed, improving economy but reducing pulling power. This trade-off is why manufacturers offer different ratios for the same vehicle depending on its intended use.

How does tire size interact with axle ratio?

Larger tires effectively lower the final gearing, since the wheel travels farther per turn, reducing acceleration and towing power much like a numerically lower axle ratio. That is why people who fit bigger tires often regear to a higher axle ratio to restore performance. Tire size and axle ratio together determine effective drivetrain gearing.
