How it works

Estimating what a carpet project will cost helps you budget and compare options, and this calculator does it from the room size and carpet price. You enter the room area, the price per square foot, and a waste allowance, and it returns the total cost and the area of carpet to buy. The calculation adds the waste allowance to your room area, then multiplies by the price. The waste allowance matters because carpet comes in rolls of fixed width and must be cut to fit, producing offcuts, and patterned carpet needs extra to match the pattern across seams; around 10 percent is typical, more for rooms with many corners, closets, or a bold pattern. Buying only the exact room area almost always leaves you short. This estimate covers the carpet material itself; a full project usually also includes padding or underlay, which is priced separately per square foot, tack strips, and installation labor, which can be a significant added cost often quoted per square foot or per yard. Carpet is sometimes sold and priced per square yard rather than per square foot, so check the unit and convert if needed, since one square yard is nine square feet. Use this to get a quick material cost before requesting quotes. Enter the room area, price, and waste allowance to estimate the carpet cost.

Formula

Cost = area × (1 + waste) × price per sq ft

The calculator adds a waste allowance to the room area, since carpet is cut from rolls and offcuts and seam matching create waste, then multiplies the resulting area by the price per square foot. The waste allowance, typically around 10 percent, ensures you buy enough material to cover the room without running short.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate carpet cost?

Add a waste allowance to the room area, then multiply by the price per square foot. For a 200 square foot room at 3 dollars per square foot with 10 percent waste, you buy 220 square feet for 660 dollars. The calculator does this and shows both the total cost and the area to purchase.

How much waste should I add for carpet?

Around 10 percent is typical for a straightforward room, covering the offcuts from cutting carpet to fit. Rooms with many corners, closets, stairs, or a bold repeating pattern that must be matched across seams need more, often 15 percent or higher. Buying a little extra avoids running short and lets you match any future repairs.

Does this include padding and installation?

No, this estimates only the carpet material. A full project usually also needs padding or underlay, priced separately per square foot, plus tack strips and installation labor, which can add a significant amount often quoted per square foot or square yard. Add those costs separately to get the complete project budget.

Is carpet priced per square foot or square yard?

Both are used. Many retailers price carpet per square yard, while others use square feet. One square yard equals nine square feet, so if your price is per square yard, divide it by nine to get the per-square-foot price before using this calculator, or the total will be badly off.

How do I measure a room for carpet?

Multiply the room's length by its width for a rectangular room to get the area in square feet. For irregular rooms, divide them into rectangles, measure each, and add the areas. Include closets and alcoves that will be carpeted. Then enter the total area here with your carpet price to estimate the cost.
