Score needed on final

How it works

When a final exam is approaching, you often want to know what score you need to reach a target course grade, and this calculator tells you. You enter your current grade in the course, the final grade you are aiming for, and the percentage weight the final exam carries, and it returns the score you must earn on the exam. The logic is straightforward: your current grade already accounts for the portion of the course that is not the final, so the calculator works out how much the final must contribute to lift your overall grade to the target. It subtracts the contribution of your existing work from the target, then divides by the final's weight to find the required exam score. This helps you set realistic expectations and prioritize studying, showing whether your goal is comfortably within reach or demands a near-perfect exam. Sometimes the result exceeds 100 percent, meaning the target is impossible with the final alone, or it may be very low or even negative, meaning you have already secured your goal. Either way, knowing the number focuses your effort where it matters. Students use this before finals to plan study time and manage stress. Enter your current grade, target grade, and the final's weight to compute the score you need.

Formula

Needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) / weight

The score you need on the final equals your target overall grade minus your current grade times the portion of the grade that is not the final, all divided by the final's weight as a fraction. It solves for the exam score that, combined with your existing work at its weight, produces exactly your target course grade.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find what I need on my final?

Subtract your current grade times the non-final portion of the course from your target grade, then divide by the final's weight as a fraction. This gives the exam score required to hit your target. The calculator does this when you enter your current grade, target grade, and the final's weight.

What does it mean if the result is over 100 percent?

A required score above 100 percent means your target grade is not achievable through the final exam alone, since even a perfect score would not raise your overall grade enough. You may need extra credit, a lower target, or to accept the highest grade the final can produce, which the same formula reveals at a 100 percent exam score.

What if the score needed is very low or negative?

A very low or negative required score means you have already effectively secured your target grade, so even a poor final would keep you at or above it. This is good news, though most schools still require you to take the final. It shows your existing work has built a comfortable cushion.

Where do I find the final's weight?

The weight of the final exam is listed in your course syllabus, usually as a percentage of the total grade, such as the final counting for 20, 30, or 40 percent. Enter that percentage. If the syllabus breaks the grade into categories, the final's category percentage is the weight to use here.

Does this account for other remaining assignments?

This calculator assumes the final exam is the only remaining graded item and that your current grade covers everything else. If you have other outstanding assignments, their weight should be folded into the calculation separately. For a simple current-grade-plus-final scenario, which is most common, the calculator gives an accurate required score.
