How it works
Grades come in percentages and in GPA points, and this calculator converts a percentage grade into a 4.0-scale GPA. You enter a percentage grade, and it returns the corresponding GPA point and letter grade. The conversion uses a common standard scale where a percentage of 93 or above earns a 4.0 (A), 90 to 92 earns 3.7 (A−), 87 to 89 earns 3.3 (B+), 83 to 86 earns 3.0 (B), and so on down the scale, with anything below 65 earning 0.0 (F). This is useful when a course reports grades as percentages but you need GPA points to calculate a semester or cumulative GPA, when comparing grades across systems, or when converting an international transcript to the United States 4.0 scale. GPA point values are the basis of the grade point average, which averages these points weighted by credit hours, so converting each course's percentage to a GPA point is the first step in computing GPA from percentage grades. Be aware that conversion scales are not universal: some institutions use different percentage cutoffs, do not use plus and minus gradations, or use a whole-letter scale where an entire B band maps to 3.0. This calculator uses a widely used plus/minus scale, so verify against your school's official conversion if precision matters. Enter a percentage grade to convert it to a GPA point and letter.
Percentage → GPA via standard scale (A=4.0, A−=3.7, B+=3.3, …)
This maps a percentage grade to a GPA point on the common 4.0 scale using standard cutoffs: 93+ is 4.0, 90–92 is 3.7, 87–89 is 3.3, 83–86 is 3.0, and so on down to below 65 being 0.0. The letter grade is also assigned from the percentage.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a percentage to GPA?
Map the percentage to a GPA point using a standard scale: 93 percent and above is 4.0, 90 to 92 is 3.7, 87 to 89 is 3.3, 83 to 86 is 3.0, and so on. The calculator applies this scale to the percentage you enter and returns the GPA point and letter grade.
Why convert a percentage to GPA?
GPA points are needed to compute a grade point average, which averages courses on a 4.0 scale weighted by credits. If your grades are reported as percentages, converting each to a GPA point is the first step. Conversion also helps compare grades across systems or translate an international transcript to the US 4.0 scale.
Is the conversion scale the same everywhere?
No. Percentage-to-GPA conversion varies by institution. Some use different cutoffs, some omit plus and minus grades, and some map an entire letter band to a single point, such as any B being 3.0. This calculator uses a common plus/minus scale, so check your school's official conversion chart when accuracy is important.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty, which is what this conversion produces. Weighted GPA adds extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses, sometimes on a 5.0 scale. This calculator gives the unweighted 4.0-scale point; for weighted GPA, add your school's bonus for advanced courses.
How do I compute my overall GPA from percentages?
Convert each course's percentage to a GPA point using this calculator, then multiply each by the course's credit hours, add those products, and divide by the total credits. That credit-weighted average is your GPA. A dedicated GPA calculator can combine multiple courses at once once you have each course's GPA point.
