How it works

Rubrics grade work across several criteria, each worth a certain number of points, and this calculator totals them into an overall percentage. You enter the points earned and possible for up to four criteria, and it returns the total percentage score along with total points earned and possible. The calculation sums the earned points and divides by the sum of possible points, so each criterion is automatically weighted by its point value — a criterion worth 20 points affects the grade twice as much as one worth 10. This is how teachers convert a filled-in rubric into a single grade, and how students can check their score before or after submission. Rubrics make grading transparent by breaking an assignment into clear components like content, organization, mechanics, and creativity, each scored against described levels. Using this calculator, you can also see the impact of improving a weak criterion: raising your score on a heavily weighted criterion moves the total more than the same gain on a minor one. If your rubric uses percentage weights instead of raw points, you can enter the weighted points directly. This tool is handy for teachers tallying rubric scores and for students estimating grades. Enter the points earned and possible for each criterion to find your total score.

Formula

Total % = (sum of points earned ÷ sum of points possible) × 100

The rubric total adds up the points earned across all criteria and divides by the sum of all points possible, then multiplies by 100 for a percentage. This gives an overall score that weights each criterion by its point value, so criteria worth more points influence the grade more.

Worked example

Criterion 1 earned:18Criterion 1 possible:20Criterion 2 earned:9Criterion 2 possible:10
(18 + 9) ÷ (20 + 10) × 100 = 90% total score.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a rubric score?

Add the points earned across all criteria and divide by the total points possible, then multiply by 100 for a percentage. If you earned 18 of 20 on one criterion and 9 of 10 on another, that is 27 of 30, or 90 percent. Each criterion is weighted automatically by its point value.

How are criteria weighted in a rubric?

Criteria are weighted by their point values. A criterion worth more points contributes more to the total score. Because the calculation divides total earned by total possible, a 20-point criterion influences the grade twice as much as a 10-point one, without any extra math. To change weighting, adjust the points possible for each criterion.

What is a grading rubric?

A rubric is a scoring guide that breaks an assignment into distinct criteria — such as content, organization, mechanics, and creativity — each with described performance levels and point values. It makes grading consistent and transparent, showing students exactly how their work is evaluated. This calculator turns the points from a completed rubric into an overall percentage grade.

How can I raise my rubric score most?

Focus on the highest-point criteria, since improving them moves your total the most. Gaining points on a criterion worth 20 helps twice as much as the same gain on one worth 10. Use the calculator to test scenarios: see how much your total rises if you improve a weak, heavily weighted criterion versus a minor one.

Can I use this for percentage-weighted rubrics?

Yes. If your rubric assigns percentage weights to criteria rather than raw points, treat each weight as the points possible and your proportional score as points earned. For example, a criterion worth 40 percent on which you scored 90 percent contributes 36 earned of 40 possible. Enter those values and the calculator totals them correctly.
