How it works

Cats age much faster than people in their early years and then more gradually, so a simple multiply-by-seven rule does not work. This calculator uses the widely accepted veterinary conversion to translate your cat's age into human-equivalent years. You enter your cat's age in years, and it returns the human-year equivalent. The model reflects feline development: a cat reaches roughly 15 human years by its first birthday, since kittens grow to near-adulthood in twelve months, then adds about 9 more human years in the second year to reach 24, and thereafter ages about 4 human years for each calendar year. So a two-year-old cat is like a young adult of 24, a five-year-old is about 36 in human terms, and a ten-year-old is around 56. Understanding your cat's life stage helps with care decisions: kittens, adults, mature cats, and seniors have different nutritional, activity, and veterinary needs. Cats are generally considered seniors around 10 to 12 human-equivalent years, when more frequent checkups and screening for age-related conditions become valuable. Indoor cats often live well into their late teens or beyond. Enter your cat's age to see its age in human years.

Formula

Year 1 = 15; year 2 = +9 (24); each year after = +4

The standard veterinary conversion counts a cat's first year as about 15 human years and the second year as 9 more, reaching 24 by age two. After that, each additional cat year adds roughly 4 human years, reflecting how cats mature fast early in life then age more steadily.

Worked example

Cat's age:5
24 (at age 2) + 3 × 4 = 36 human years for a 5-year-old cat.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert cat years to human years?

The standard method counts the first cat year as about 15 human years, the second as 9 more for a total of 24, and every year after that as roughly 4 human years. So a 5-year-old cat is about 36 in human terms. This reflects rapid early maturity followed by steadier aging, unlike the old times-seven myth.

Why isn't a cat year just seven human years?

The times-seven rule is a myth that ignores how cats develop. A one-year-old cat is already a physically mature young adult, equivalent to about 15 human years, far more than 7. Because cats mature so quickly at first and then age more slowly, a curved conversion like the veterinary standard is much more accurate than any fixed multiplier.

When is a cat considered a senior?

Cats are generally considered mature around 7 to 10 years and senior from about 11 years, which is roughly 60 human-equivalent years. At this stage, twice-yearly veterinary checkups and screening for kidney disease, arthritis, dental problems, and thyroid issues become valuable. Many cats live well into their late teens, so senior care can span many happy years.

How long do cats usually live?

Indoor cats commonly live 13 to 17 years, and many reach their early twenties with good care. Outdoor cats typically have shorter lifespans due to traffic, predators, and disease. Genetics, diet, weight management, dental care, and regular veterinary visits all influence longevity, so attentive care can add years to a cat's life.

Does breed affect how a cat ages?

Somewhat. While the general conversion applies to all cats, some breeds are longer-lived or more prone to specific conditions. Mixed-breed cats often enjoy good longevity. Size and health matter more than breed for most cats, so maintaining a healthy weight and staying current with veterinary care are the biggest factors in how gracefully a cat ages.
