How it works
Sharing gas costs on a road trip or carpool is fairest when everyone pays an equal part of the actual fuel used, and this calculator works it out. You enter the trip distance, the vehicle's fuel economy in miles per gallon, the price of gas, and the number of people splitting the cost, and it returns the total fuel cost, each person's share, and the gallons used. The calculation divides distance by miles per gallon to find gallons consumed, multiplies by the price per gallon for the total cost, and divides among the passengers. This is more accurate than guessing a round number, because it reflects the real fuel the trip burned based on the specific car and route. It is handy for carpools to work or school, group road trips, and ride-sharing among friends. A few considerations: whether to include the driver in the split (many groups do, since the driver provides the car and does the driving, so passengers cover fuel), whether to add wear-and-tear or tolls, and whether to count only one-way or round-trip distance. For a round trip, enter the full there-and-back mileage. This calculator gives a clear, transparent basis for splitting gas so everyone pays their fair share. Enter the distance, fuel economy, gas price, and number of people to split the cost.
Per person = (distance ÷ mpg × gas price) ÷ people
The fuel used is the trip distance divided by the vehicle's miles per gallon, and multiplying by the gas price gives the total fuel cost. Dividing that by the number of people splitting the trip gives each person's fair share of the gas money.

Frequently asked questions
How do you split gas money for a trip?
Calculate the fuel used by dividing the distance by the car's miles per gallon, multiply by the gas price for the total cost, then divide by the number of people. A 300-mile trip in a 30-mpg car at $3.50 per gallon costs $35, or $8.75 each among four people. This reflects the actual fuel burned.
Should the driver pay a share of gas?
It varies by group. Often passengers cover the fuel and the driver's contribution is providing the car and doing the driving, so the driver may not pay a gas share. Other groups split evenly including the driver. Agree beforehand; this calculator can divide among all occupants or just the passengers, depending on the number you enter.
Should I use one-way or round-trip distance?
Use whichever reflects the fuel actually used. For a round trip where everyone rides both ways, enter the full there-and-back mileage. For a one-way ride, use the one-way distance. If passengers only ride part of the journey, you may prorate their share. Matching the distance to the actual travel keeps the split fair.
Should we include tolls and wear-and-tear?
Fuel is the main shared cost, but some groups also split tolls and parking, and occasionally add a small amount for vehicle wear-and-tear on long trips. This calculator covers fuel; you can add tolls and other costs to the total and re-divide. For casual carpools, splitting just the gas is usually considered fair and simple.
Why calculate instead of guessing?
Estimating a round number for gas can overcharge or undercharge. Calculating from the actual distance, the car's fuel economy, and the real gas price gives a precise, transparent figure everyone can see is fair. It also adapts to different vehicles and fuel prices, so an efficient car's passengers pay less than a thirsty truck's, as they should.
