How it works
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, or WPM, and this calculator finds both your gross and net speed from the words you typed and the time it took. You enter the number of words, the time in minutes, and optionally the number of errors, and it returns your gross WPM and, accounting for mistakes, your net WPM. Gross WPM is simply words divided by minutes, measuring raw speed regardless of accuracy. Net WPM subtracts your errors from the word count before dividing, which gives a truer picture of productive typing, since fast typing riddled with mistakes has to be corrected and is less useful. By convention, a word is counted as five characters including spaces, so typing tests standardize on that definition rather than counting actual words of varying length. Average typing speed is around 40 WPM, proficient typists reach 60 to 80, and professionals and fast typists can exceed 100. Knowing your speed helps you track improvement, meet job requirements that specify a minimum WPM, and set practice goals. Accuracy matters as much as raw speed, which is why the net figure is valuable. Use this after a timed typing test to measure and monitor your progress. Enter your words typed, time, and errors to compute your typing speed.
Gross WPM = words / minutes; Net WPM = (words − errors) / minutes
Gross typing speed divides the number of words typed by the time in minutes. Net speed subtracts errors from the word count before dividing, penalizing mistakes so it reflects usable output. Both are expressed in words per minute, the standard measure of typing speed, where a word is conventionally five characters.

Frequently asked questions
How is typing speed calculated?
Gross words per minute is the number of words typed divided by the time in minutes. Net WPM subtracts your errors from the word count first, reflecting accurate output. Typing 300 words in 5 minutes is 60 gross WPM, dropping to 58 net if you made 10 errors. The calculator computes both.
What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Gross WPM measures raw speed regardless of mistakes, while net WPM penalizes errors by subtracting them from the word count before dividing by time. Net WPM better reflects real productivity, since errors must be corrected. A high gross speed with many errors can yield a much lower, more honest net speed.
How is a word defined in typing tests?
By convention, a word in typing measurement is five characters, including spaces and punctuation, rather than an actual dictionary word. This standardizes results so that typing short or long words does not skew the score. Most typing tests use this five-character definition, which is why speeds are comparable across different texts.
What is a good typing speed?
The average typing speed is around 40 words per minute. Proficient typists reach 60 to 80 WPM, and professional or highly skilled typists can exceed 100. Many jobs that require typing specify a minimum, often 40 to 60 WPM. Regular practice steadily improves speed, and accuracy should improve alongside it.
Why does accuracy matter as much as speed?
Fast typing full of errors is inefficient because mistakes must be found and corrected, wasting time and reducing usable output. Net WPM captures this by penalizing errors. Employers and typing tests value accuracy alongside speed, so improving both together produces the best real-world typing performance rather than just chasing a high raw number.
