How it works

Calculating the real profit on a cryptocurrency trade means accounting for the price change, the amount of coins, and the exchange fees, and this calculator does all three. You enter the buy price, the sell price, the amount of coins, and any buy and sell fees, and it returns your net profit and your return on investment. The profit is the proceeds from selling, the sell price times the amount minus the sell fee, less the cost of buying, the buy price times the amount plus the buy fee. Fees matter in crypto because exchanges often charge a percentage on each trade, and frequent trading or small positions can see fees noticeably erode gains, so including them gives a truer result. The return on investment expresses your profit relative to what you put in, letting you compare trades of different sizes. Because crypto prices are highly volatile, profits and losses can be large and swift, and this calculator works equally for a gain or a loss, showing a negative profit and ROI when a trade goes against you. It handles fractional coin amounts common in crypto, down to tiny fractions of a coin. Note it does not account for taxes on crypto gains, which apply in many jurisdictions and reduce your net return. Enter your prices, amount, and fees to compute your crypto profit and ROI.

Formula

Profit = (sell × amount − sell fee) − (buy × amount + buy fee)

The net profit is the sale proceeds minus the total cost. Proceeds are the sell price times the amount of coins, less the sell fee. Cost is the buy price times the amount, plus the buy fee. The return on investment divides the profit by the total cost and multiplies by 100.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate crypto profit?

Subtract your total cost from your sale proceeds. Proceeds are the sell price times the amount of coins minus the sell fee, and cost is the buy price times the amount plus the buy fee. The difference is your net profit, which the calculator also expresses as a return on investment percentage.

Why include exchange fees?

Crypto exchanges typically charge a fee on each trade, often a percentage of the transaction. These fees reduce your real profit, and with frequent trading or small amounts they can significantly eat into gains. Including buy and sell fees gives an accurate profit figure rather than an optimistic one that ignores trading costs.

Does this work for fractional coins?

Yes. Cryptocurrencies are commonly bought and sold in fractional amounts, since a single coin can be very expensive. The calculator accepts amounts down to tiny fractions of a coin, so you can enter, for example, 0.5 or 0.001 of a coin and get an accurate profit and return for your exact holding.

Are crypto gains taxed?

In many jurisdictions, profits from selling cryptocurrency are subject to capital gains tax, with rates depending on how long you held the asset and your local rules. This calculator shows profit before taxes. Your after-tax return will be lower, so account for any applicable crypto taxes separately when planning.

What if my trade lost money?

The calculator works for losses too. If the sell price and fees leave you with less than your cost, the profit and ROI will be negative, showing the size and percentage of your loss. Given crypto's high volatility, tracking losing trades is just as important as tracking winners for understanding your results.
