How it works
A regular hexagon is a six-sided polygon with all sides and angles equal, and this calculator finds its area and perimeter from a single side length. You enter the length of one side, and it returns the area using the exact formula and the perimeter as six times the side. The area formula comes from splitting the hexagon into six equilateral triangles that meet at the centre; summing their areas gives three times the square root of three, divided by two, multiplied by the side squared. Regular hexagons are among the most efficient shapes in nature and engineering because they tile a plane with no gaps while minimising perimeter, which is why honeycombs, many nuts and bolts, floor tiles, and carbon lattices adopt the hexagonal form. Each interior angle of a regular hexagon is 120 degrees, and the shape has six lines of symmetry. This calculator assumes a regular hexagon, where every side is the same length; an irregular hexagon would require a different method such as dividing it into triangles. Enter the side length to compute the area and perimeter of your regular hexagon.
Area = (3√3 / 2)·s²
A regular hexagon can be divided into six identical equilateral triangles, so its area is six times the area of one such triangle, which simplifies to three times the square root of three divided by two, all times the side length squared. The perimeter is simply six times the side length, since a regular hexagon has six equal sides.

Frequently asked questions
How do you find the area of a regular hexagon?
Multiply three times the square root of three, divided by two, by the side length squared. For a side of two, the area is six times the square root of three, about 10.39 square units. This formula works only for a regular hexagon with all sides equal, which is exactly what this calculator assumes.
Why can a hexagon be split into triangles?
A regular hexagon's centre connects to all six vertices, dividing it into six identical equilateral triangles whose side equals the hexagon's side. The hexagon's area is therefore six times one triangle's area. This decomposition is why the area formula contains the square root of three, which comes from the height of an equilateral triangle.
What is the interior angle of a regular hexagon?
Each interior angle of a regular hexagon is 120 degrees, and the six angles sum to 720 degrees. This 120-degree angle is why hexagons tile a flat surface perfectly, since three hexagons meeting at a point make a full 360 degrees, leaving no gaps, a property exploited by honeycombs and tiling patterns.
Does this work for irregular hexagons?
No. This calculator assumes a regular hexagon with six equal sides and equal angles. An irregular hexagon, whose sides or angles differ, cannot be found from a single side length. To find its area you would divide it into triangles or use the shoelace formula with the coordinates of each vertex.
Why are hexagons so common in nature?
Hexagons tile a plane with no wasted space while using the least total edge length, making them extremely efficient. Bees build hexagonal honeycomb cells to store the most honey with the least wax, and the same efficiency appears in basalt columns, insect eyes, and graphene, where hexagonal arrangements minimise material or energy.
