How it works

Parts per million, or ppm, is a way to express very small concentrations, and this calculator computes it from the amount of solute and the total amount of solution. You enter the quantity of the substance of interest and the total quantity of the mixture, using the same units for both, and it returns the concentration in ppm. The calculation divides the part by the whole and scales up by a million, so one ppm means one part of solute in a million parts of solution. This unit is ideal for trace amounts where percentages would be awkwardly small: 0.0001 percent is the same as 1 ppm. Parts per million is used everywhere that tiny concentrations matter, including water quality for contaminants like lead or chlorine, air pollution measured as gases per million parts of air, food safety limits for additives and residues, and industrial process control. Because it is a ratio of like units, ppm works with mass, volume, or count as long as you are consistent, though for dilute water solutions one ppm is often taken as one milligram per liter. For even smaller traces, parts per billion is used, which is a thousand times finer. Enter the solute amount and total solution to compute the concentration in ppm.

Formula

ppm = (solute / total solution) × 1,000,000

Parts per million divides the amount of a substance by the total amount of the mixture and multiplies by one million. Both amounts must be in the same units so they cancel, leaving a dimensionless ratio expressed per million parts. One ppm means one unit of solute in a million units of total solution, a very small concentration.

(2 / 1,000,000) × 1,000,000 = 2 ppm.

Frequently asked questions

What does ppm mean?

PPM stands for parts per million, a unit for expressing very dilute concentrations. It tells you how many parts of a substance exist in one million parts of the total mixture. One ppm equals 0.0001 percent, making it convenient for trace amounts that would be cumbersome to write as tiny percentages.

How do you calculate ppm?

Divide the amount of the solute by the total amount of the solution, then multiply by one million. Both quantities must be in the same units so they cancel. For 2 units of solute in a million units of solution, the result is 2 ppm. The calculator does this from your two inputs.

Is 1 ppm the same as 1 mg/L?

For dilute water-based solutions, one ppm is commonly treated as one milligram per liter, because one liter of water weighs about one million milligrams. This approximation is standard in water quality testing. It is not exact for concentrated solutions or other solvents, where density differs, but it holds well for typical dilute aqueous samples.

Where is ppm used?

Parts per million is used in water quality to report contaminants like lead, nitrates, and chlorine, in air quality for pollutant gases, in food safety for additive and residue limits, and in industry for process control and material purity. Anywhere trace concentrations must be measured and compared, ppm is a standard, convenient unit.

What is the difference between ppm and ppb?

Parts per billion, or ppb, is a thousand times smaller than parts per million, expressing one part in a billion instead of a million. It is used for even more dilute traces, such as certain pollutants and toxins. One ppm equals one thousand ppb, so the choice depends on how small the concentration is.
