How it works
Knowing your running pace helps you train, race, and set goals, and this calculator finds it from your distance and time. You enter the distance you ran in miles and your total time in minutes, and it returns your pace per mile, your pace per kilometer, and your speed in miles per hour. Pace is simply time divided by distance, expressed as minutes per unit of distance, and it is the standard way runners measure and target their effort. A lower pace number means a faster run. The calculator gives pace in both miles and kilometers, since races and runners use both, converting between them using the fact that a mile is about 1.609 kilometers. It also provides speed in miles per hour for a different perspective. Runners use pace to plan even splits, running each mile at a consistent pace rather than starting too fast, to project finish times for races, and to gauge fitness improvements over time. For example, holding an 8-minute-per-mile pace over a marathon predicts a finish just under 3 hours and 30 minutes. The pace values here are shown as decimal minutes, so 8.5 means 8 minutes and 30 seconds. Use this to check your training runs, plan race strategy, and set realistic goals based on your current pace. Enter your distance and total time to find your running pace and speed.
Pace per mile = total time / distance in miles
Pace is time divided by distance. Dividing your total minutes by the distance in miles gives minutes per mile, and dividing by the distance in kilometers gives minutes per kilometer. Speed in miles per hour is the distance divided by the time in hours.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate running pace?
Divide your total running time by the distance you covered. For time in minutes and distance in miles, this gives minutes per mile; dividing by kilometers gives minutes per kilometer. The calculator computes both paces and your speed in miles per hour from your distance and total time.
What is a running split?
A split is the time taken to cover a specific segment of a run, most commonly one mile or one kilometer. Even splits mean running each segment at the same pace, a common strategy for efficient racing. Knowing your average pace, which this calculator provides, is the basis for planning consistent splits.
How is pace shown as a decimal?
This calculator shows pace as decimal minutes, so a pace of 8.5 means 8 minutes and 30 seconds per mile, since 0.5 of a minute is 30 seconds. To convert the decimal part to seconds, multiply it by 60. For example, a pace of 7.25 is 7 minutes and 15 seconds per mile.
How do I convert between mile and kilometer pace?
A mile is about 1.609 kilometers, so a per-mile pace is faster in number than the equivalent per-kilometer pace. To convert, divide your per-mile pace by 1.609 to get per-kilometer pace. The calculator does this automatically, showing both so you can use whichever unit your race or training plan uses.
How can I use pace to plan a race?
Pick a target finish time, divide by the race distance to get your required pace, and aim to run even splits at that pace, or slightly negative splits with a faster second half. Comparing your training paces to the required race pace shows whether your goal is realistic and how much to improve.
