How it works

Whether buying a memory card, choosing a phone, or planning a backup, it helps to know how many photos your storage holds, and this calculator tells you. You enter the storage size in gigabytes and the average size of one photo in megabytes, and it returns how many photos fit and the total storage in megabytes. The calculation converts your storage to megabytes, using 1,024 megabytes per gigabyte, and divides by the average photo size, rounding down to whole photos. The average photo size is the key variable, and it varies enormously with the camera and settings: a compressed smartphone JPEG might be 2 to 5 megabytes, a high-resolution photo 8 to 15 megabytes, and a RAW file from a professional camera 25 to 50 megabytes or more. So the same card holds far fewer RAW files than JPEGs. Estimate your average by checking the file sizes of your typical photos. This helps you choose the right storage capacity, avoid running out of space on a trip, and plan cloud or drive backups. Keep in mind that usable storage is often slightly less than the advertised capacity due to formatting and system overhead, and that some space may be used by the operating system or apps, so treat the result as an upper-bound estimate. Enter your storage size and average photo size to find how many photos fit.

Formula

Photos = floor(storage in MB / average photo size in MB)

Convert the storage capacity from gigabytes to megabytes by multiplying by 1,024, then divide by the average photo file size in megabytes and round down. The result is how many photos of that average size fit in the available storage.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos fit in my storage?

Divide your storage in megabytes (gigabytes times 1,024) by the average photo size in megabytes. For example, a 64 GB card holds about 16,384 photos at 4 MB each. The calculator does this from your storage size and average photo size, giving a quick estimate of capacity.

How big is an average photo?

It depends heavily on the camera and settings. A compressed smartphone JPEG is often 2 to 5 megabytes, a high-resolution JPEG 8 to 15 megabytes, and an uncompressed RAW file from a professional camera 25 to 50 megabytes or more. Check the file sizes of your own typical photos to get an accurate average for the calculation.

Why do RAW files take so much more space?

RAW files store the complete, uncompressed sensor data with maximum detail and editing flexibility, so they are far larger than JPEGs, which are compressed and discard some data. A memory card that holds tens of thousands of JPEGs may hold only a few thousand RAW files, which matters for photographers shooting in RAW.

Is my usable storage the same as the advertised size?

Usually a bit less. Advertised capacity is often stated in decimal gigabytes, while devices measure in binary, and formatting plus system files consume some space. A 64 GB card typically offers somewhat less usable space. Because of this, treat the calculated photo count as an upper-bound estimate rather than an exact figure.

How can I fit more photos?

Shoot in JPEG rather than RAW when maximum editing latitude is not needed, choose a slightly lower resolution or higher compression, and offload photos to a computer or cloud storage regularly to free up space. Larger-capacity cards and drives are inexpensive, so upgrading storage is often the simplest way to hold more photos.
