ARPU

How it works

ARPU, average revenue per user, measures how much revenue each user or customer generates on average, and this calculator finds it from total revenue and user count. You enter the total revenue for a period and the number of users or accounts active in that same period, and it returns the ARPU. This metric is central to subscription, telecom, gaming, and app businesses because it shows how effectively you monetise your audience, independent of how large that audience is. A rising ARPU means you are extracting more value per user, through higher pricing, upsells, add-ons, or a shift toward higher-value plans, while a falling ARPU can warn of discounting, downgrades, or an influx of low-value users. ARPU is most useful when tracked over time and segmented, for example by plan, region, or acquisition channel, revealing which cohorts monetise best. It pairs naturally with user growth to forecast revenue and with acquisition cost to judge payback. Be careful to match the time period: monthly ARPU uses monthly revenue and monthly active users, and mixing periods gives a misleading figure. Some businesses use average revenue per account instead when accounts have multiple users. Enter your total revenue and number of users to compute ARPU.

Formula

ARPU = total revenue / number of users

Average revenue per user divides total revenue over a period by the number of active users or accounts in that period. It reveals how much revenue each user generates on average, letting you track monetisation, compare segments, and forecast revenue as your user base grows. Use the same time frame for revenue and user count.

Frequently asked questions

What is ARPU?

ARPU stands for average revenue per user. It is the total revenue over a period divided by the number of users or accounts in that period, showing how much each user generates on average. It is a key monetisation metric for subscription, telecom, gaming, and app businesses, independent of the size of the user base.

How do you calculate ARPU?

Divide total revenue for a chosen period by the number of active users or accounts in that same period. If you earned fifty thousand dollars from twenty-five hundred users, your ARPU is twenty dollars. Keep the revenue and user count on the same time frame, such as both monthly or both annual, for an accurate figure.

What is the difference between ARPU and ARPA?

ARPU is average revenue per user, while ARPA is average revenue per account. They differ when a single account can have multiple users, as in many business software products. ARPA is often higher because accounts bundle several users. Choose whichever unit matches how you sell, and apply it consistently across your analysis.

Why is ARPU important?

ARPU reveals how well you monetise each user, letting you track pricing power, spot the impact of upsells or discounts, and compare segments and cohorts. Combined with user growth it forecasts revenue, and combined with acquisition cost it assesses payback. A healthy, rising ARPU signals improving monetisation, a core driver of sustainable growth.

Should I use monthly or annual ARPU?

Either works, as long as revenue and users cover the same period. Monthly ARPU uses monthly revenue and monthly active users and is common for subscription tracking, while annual ARPU smooths seasonal swings. Just never mix periods, such as annual revenue with monthly users, or the resulting number will be meaningless.
