How it works

Payment processing fees quietly reduce what you actually receive from each sale, and this calculator shows the exact Stripe fee and your net. You enter the payment amount and, optionally, the percentage and fixed fee (defaulting to Stripe's common 2.9 percent plus 30 cents for online card payments), and it returns the fee, the net amount you receive, and the effective rate. The fee combines a percentage of the transaction with a flat per-transaction charge, so the total is the amount times the rate plus the fixed fee. A key insight is how the fixed fee affects small transactions: on a large payment the 30-cent fixed portion is negligible, but on a small payment it can dominate, making the effective rate far higher than the headline percentage. For example, the fixed fee alone is 30 percent of a one-dollar charge. This is why micro-transactions are expensive to process and why some businesses set minimum order values or bundle purchases. Knowing your true net helps with pricing, since to actually receive a target amount you must charge more to cover the fee. Stripe's exact rates vary by country, card type, and product, and international or currency-conversion transactions cost more, so adjust the percentage and fixed fee to match your situation. This calculator works for any percentage-plus-fixed fee structure, so it also handles other processors. Enter the amount and fee to find the Stripe fee and net.

Formula

Fee = amount × percentage + fixed fee

Payment processors like Stripe charge a percentage of the transaction plus a fixed per-transaction fee. The fee is the amount times the percentage rate plus the flat fee. Subtracting it from the payment gives the net you receive. The fixed fee makes small payments cost proportionally more, raising the effective rate.

Frequently asked questions

How are Stripe fees calculated?

Stripe charges a percentage of the transaction plus a fixed per-transaction fee, commonly 2.9 percent plus 30 cents for standard online card payments in the US. The total fee is the amount times the percentage plus the fixed fee, and your net is the payment minus that. The calculator computes all three from your inputs.

Why do small payments cost more proportionally?

The fixed per-transaction fee is a much larger share of a small payment than a large one. On a $100 charge, the 30-cent fixed fee is trivial, but on a $2 charge it is 15 percent on its own, pushing the effective rate well above the headline percentage. This makes processing many small transactions relatively expensive.

How much should I charge to receive a specific amount?

To net a target amount after the fee, you must charge more than the target, because the fee is deducted. Add the fixed fee and then divide by one minus the percentage rate. Some businesses build the fee into their pricing so the net after processing covers their needs. Test different amounts with the calculator.

Do Stripe's fees vary?

Yes. Stripe's rates depend on the country, the card type, whether the payment is domestic or international, and the specific product or plan. International cards, currency conversion, and certain payment methods carry higher fees, while some regions have different standard rates. Adjust the percentage and fixed fee in the calculator to match your actual situation.

Does this calculator work for other processors?

Yes. Because it uses a general percentage-plus-fixed-fee formula, you can enter the rates for any payment processor, such as Square, Braintree, or others, by changing the percentage and fixed fee fields. The default values reflect Stripe's common online rate, but the calculation applies to any processor with the same fee structure.
