How it works
Shipping is often priced per kilogram, and this calculator finds the total cost and the effective per-kilogram rate. You enter the weight, the rate per kilogram, and any handling fee, and it returns the total shipping cost and the effective cost per kilogram. The base cost is weight times the rate, and adding a fixed handling or documentation fee gives the total, which divided by the weight yields the real per-kilogram cost. The fixed fee makes light shipments proportionally more expensive: on a heavy shipment the handling fee is spread thin, but on a light one it can dominate, pushing the effective per-kilogram cost well above the base rate. This mirrors how carriers price parcels and freight, and it explains why consolidating shipments or shipping in bulk lowers the per-unit cost. Note that many carriers charge by dimensional (volumetric) weight rather than actual weight when a package is large but light, billing on whichever is greater, so for bulky items check the dimensional weight separately. This calculator uses actual weight. It is useful for e-commerce sellers costing out shipping, importers and exporters comparing freight quotes, and anyone budgeting a shipment. To find the most economical option, compare the effective cost per kilogram across carriers and shipment sizes. Enter the weight, rate, and handling fee to find the total and per-kilogram cost.
Total = weight × rate per kg + handling ; effective = total / weight
The base shipping cost is the weight multiplied by the rate per kilogram. Adding a fixed handling fee gives the total. Dividing that total back by the weight gives the effective cost per kilogram, which is higher than the base rate because the fixed fee is spread across the weight.

Frequently asked questions
How is shipping cost per kg calculated?
Multiply the weight by the rate per kilogram for the base cost, add any fixed handling fee for the total, then divide the total by the weight for the effective cost per kilogram. The calculator shows both the total shipping cost and the all-in per-kilogram rate from your inputs.
Why is the effective rate higher than the base rate?
The fixed handling fee is added on top of the per-kilogram charge, so when you divide the total (including the fee) by the weight, the effective per-kilogram cost exceeds the base rate. The lighter the shipment, the more the fixed fee inflates the effective rate, which is why small shipments cost more per kilogram.
What is dimensional weight?
Dimensional, or volumetric, weight is a pricing method carriers use for packages that are large but light. They calculate a weight from the package's dimensions and bill on whichever is greater, the actual or dimensional weight. This calculator uses actual weight; for bulky, lightweight items, check the dimensional weight separately, as it may cost more.
How can I reduce shipping cost per kg?
Consolidate multiple items into fewer, heavier shipments so the fixed fees spread across more weight, negotiate lower per-kilogram rates for volume, choose economy services for non-urgent freight, and reduce package size to avoid dimensional-weight penalties. Comparing the effective cost per kilogram across carriers and shipment sizes reveals the most economical option.
Who uses cost per kg for shipping?
E-commerce sellers use it to price shipping and protect margins, importers and exporters use it to compare international freight quotes, and businesses use it to budget logistics. The effective cost per kilogram is a standard way to compare shipping options fairly, since it normalizes total cost, including fees, to the shipment weight.
